ENTRY INFORMATION:
All entries MUST be postmarked no later than 30 days before the competition date! After 30 days there will be a $20.00 late penalty for each entry. Entries are taken on a first come first served basis, therefore, register as soon as possible in order to secure a spot. No entries will be accepted by phone or fax. All must be mailed in. Entries will only be processed if fully completed and accompanied by a certified check or money order paid in full. All checks or money orders should be made out to:

Only one check per school please!! No checks will be accepted from individual students, parents or guardians. A packet will be sent to each school approximately one week before competition containing all necessary details.

ENTRY FEES:
Entry fees are $49.00 per participant and Coaches may enter free!! Up to 2 coaches may enter at not charge. Only the coaches whose names are on the application form may enter free.

CATEGORIES:
1. Divisional (Competitive)-College teams that choose to use all 3 styles of dance including pom, funk, and jazz in thier routines. This category must adhere to the divisional rules and regulations.

2. Open (Adjudicated)-College teams who choose to compete a routine that does not meet divisional requirements. This category must adhere to the open rules and regulations.

DIVISIONAL RULES & REGULATIONS

Division 1A: All division 1A schools

Division I: All division 1 and 1AA schools

Division II: All division II, III, Community Colleges, Junior Colleges.

*All teams are required to compete in the following three categories. Each team will determine wich category to compete in according to the category thier NCAA football team competes in. If a school does not have a football team they will go according to thier NCAA basketball team.

*All participants must be currently enrolled in thier college in order to compete in this competition.

ROUTINE REQUIREMENTS:
EACH DANCE SHOULD INCLUDE 30 CONSECUTIVE SECONDS OF ALL THREE OF THE FOLLOWING SECTIONS:

Jazz Section: emphasis on technique, style, placement of the body, uniformity and skills.

Funk Section: emphasis on street style dancing including body isolations, creativity, rhythm as well as uniformity

Pom Section: similar but not exactly like cheer moves. Emphasis on uniformity, precision, level changes, and synchronization

* Please submit, on a separate sheet, a routine outline that shows when sections start in the music. (i.e., POM section 1sec-45 sec, FUNK 45 sec –1:30m, JAZZ 1:30 –2:00, ending)

JUDGING AND DEDUCTIONS:
Each entry will be judged by a highly qualified panel of judges. All judges decisions will be final. Contacting or speaking to judges is strictly prohibited at all times in order to give a fair chance to all participants. Performances will be judged on the following criteria:

Technique, Stage Presence, Difficulty, Spacing Precision, Choreography

* The divisional category will NOT be adjudicated. However, if there are no teams competing in your division, you must recieve a certain score to qualify for first place.

DEDUCTIONS:
Not Meeting Routine Outline: each team must follow routine requirements located in rules and regulations ( 2.0 deduction if not followed)

Time Limit Violation: For each 5 seconds over time limit judge will deduct 1.0. For example 10 seconds over time limit will result in a 2.0 point loss.

Inappropriate Music/ Movement/ Costume: All aspects of the dance routine including music, choreography, and costume MUST be appropriate for a family audience. Any suggestive choreography including hip thrusting touching or slapping will result in a 4.0 point deduction. Any suggestive music including vulgar language will result in a 4.0 point deduction. Any suggestive costumes that a judge feels is not appropriate for family viewing will also result in a 4.0 point deduction.

Safety Violations: Dancers may wear jewelry that accentuates their costume, however hoop or dangly earrings, rings, belly button rings, tongue rings, nose rings etc are strictly prohibited and will result in a 2.0 point deduction.

Tumbling and Lifts: All tumbling skills except for rolls and shoulder backward rolls are prohibited. Any other movement is acceptable as long as it does not involve hip over head rotation. Any violation to this will receive a 2.0 point deduction. Cheer stunts as well as tosses are prohibited. However, traditional dance lifts are acceptable. Violation of this will also result in a 2.0 point deduction.

OPEN RULES & REGULATIONS:

ROUTINE REQUIREMENTS:

*Each team must enter under one of the following styles of dance.

BALLET-Classical ballet style and technique with the use of ballet slippers

TAP- Creating syncopated rhythms with the use of tap shoes

JAZZ- Classical jazz style and techniques.

MODERN-A style of dance that rejects the limitations of classical ballet and favors movement deriving from the expression of inner feeling.

HIP-HOP/ FUNK-Street dance containing isolated movements to contemporary music.

STEP-Modern form of African dance that can incorporate drill team moves, marching, chanting can be accompanied by music

KICKLINE- Routine that contains at least 50% of kickline combinations

OPEN ALT- Any routine that does not fall into the above categories

JUDGING CRITERIA:
In this category, judging will be based on an adjudication score system. Each routine must obtain a certain score to recieve an award.

PLATNUM- total score of 245-300

HIGH GOLD- total score 210-244

GOLD- total score of 180-209

SILVER- total score of 150-179

BRONZE- total score of 90-149

DEDUCTIONS:
The same deductions apply to the open category as to the divisional category except there will be no deduction for not meeting routne requirements as there is no routine outline required

MUSIC:
Each studio is required to bring their own music in the form of a CD or CASETTE TAPE (Note that stereo systems play cassette tapes at slightly different speeds). Each CD or Tape must contain only ONE song that is properly labeled. All CD’s must be turned into the sound booth no later than 1/2 hour before the beginning of that day’s show. Turn it Up recommends that each entry have at least 1 backup CD or Tape. If music fails to work on the first try it is the responsibility of the studio to bring up the backup CD. That entry may be put on hold until music is found.

TIME LIMITS:
Each routine may not be longer than 2min 15sec

Each section must be at least 30 consecutive seconds however they can be longer as long as the entire song does not exceed 2 min 15 seconds in length.

*Timing starts with first note, word or movement after dancers have taken the floor.

* Timing ends with last note, word or movement. Teams must enter and exit in a timely fashion before and after performing

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Props are allowed on stage, however they must be moved on and off stage in a timely manner. If judges feel that removal of props take too long points may be deducted. No dangerous props are allowed. Dangerous props include knives or swords etc.
